“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” Genesis 1:26-31. The second verse of Genesis told us “the Spirit” was hovering above the waters and John 1:1,14 makes clear Jesus was with God from the beginning. This leaves little debate about whose image “us” is.
Ryan Perkins, the associate pastor at my church, recently brought forth two very important points, one being we were created with a dignity and an order that does not exist within the rest of God’s created orders. Ryan emphasized this with the serpent’s promise (Gen. 9:6); if Adam and Eve would disobey God and eat from the tree of knowledge, they would be like God. The irony in this fall of man is that they were already like God!
Knowing we are made in His image, that we are like Him and that we can be made holy as He is holy (see previous post), it is impossible to love God and hate anyone created in His image (Ryan’s second point). This is the single best take away I have heard that retains Scriptural credentials within the first book of the Bible. Jesus taught us this repeatedly hundreds of years later, but God laid it out right from the gitgo. How cool is that? Have a blessed week. Steve

Steve – thank you for reminding us of this important lesson of being created in His image (“Let US…”).
